After over 40 years of travel in Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico and South America, along with over 50 ocean and river cruises we needed more. For many years we owned and captained a 32 ft sail boat, Rags Teal. Janet and I, along with our boys, logged lots of time aboard, enjoying the inland waterways and Atlantic Ocean. We continued to fuel our need for travel and adventure at our manageable pace while raising a family. Like most of us, years past and our families and obligations grew. Life threw lots of curves along with the joys, some expected and others felt like a train wreck. Long and short, we survived and lived to see another day. Janet and I have always been itchy for change, me possibly even more than her. After I retired and survived catastrophic illness that itch became a severe rash. Janet continued to handle our travel consulting business and I pursued writing, photo-art and music. We continue to travel, enjoy our loving family and friends and live the American dream, or maybe not. What we realized was missing was the exploration of life and seeking new adventures and experiences. That American dream owning a home and collecting stuff was crushing us. We started watching endless YouTube channels about sailing couples doing passage making around the world experiencing the excitement and tribulations of that the lifestyle. For a while it appeared that we may have found our niche. When reality set in we realized that unfortunately dreams of that lifestyle had passed us by. How we wished we were twenty years younger. Not being quitters Janet and I started to look into other nomadic lifestyles that would fit our capabilities and satisfy our desire for living life’s real dream. As James Taylor eloquently penned, “The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time”. Why waste that passage. So we continued read, YouTube and talk to folks who were giving up stuff for the journey. It’s all about the journey. RV-ing was totally foreign to us but over time we realized that we could do it and it would fulfill our desires. Planning, planning, planning piled on top of logistics, logistics and more logistics. The adage that nothing in life comes easy holds true, especially when you are completely changing your lifestyle. Determination is a huge word in our vocabulary and believe us, “it isn’t easy”. We researched what kind of rig would work best for us and decided a Class A motor coach would suit our perceived needs for mobility, comfort, space and ability to flat tow a car behind. We bought a coach, sold our house, sold, donated and threw away everything we owned that we would not be able to take with us due to space and weight restrictions. This is where our new journey beings. We are finally on the road. It is heart wrenching to leave our family and friends here in W Michigan but reality is, we are not abandoning anyone or anything. We are just moving on to different locations around the country, following the weather and enjoying the passage of time knowing we will come back to visit with or without our mobile home and spend quality time with the ones we love. When you leave the extreme winter weather of W Michigan where does one go. South, young men and women, go south. Our first planned trip is to travel from Grand Rapids to Florida. We have lots of family and friends throughout the state and our plan is to spend the rest of the winter there before heading north again. We hope you will follow us on our journey as we share the stories, photographs and videos of our journey and life on the road.
